How to plan a month of social media content for your business
By Martin Soliman,
Most small businesses do not struggle with social media because they have nothing to say. They struggle because posting happens only when someone has a spare hour. A simple monthly plan removes that pressure and keeps your page looking active and considered. This guide sets out a practical way to plan a month of content for a cafe, clinic, boutique, studio, accounting practice or any other Australian business.
Start with the purpose of your page
Before choosing what to post, decide what a visitor to your page should do. A cafe might want people to visit this weekend. An accountant might want a booking for a tax consultation. A boutique might want visitors to browse the latest range. Write one sentence describing the action, and test each planned post against it. If a post does not support that action or build trust in your business, it is probably filler.
Choose a few content themes
Themes make planning faster because you are never starting from a blank page. Most businesses can cover their needs with three or four of the following:
- The work itself: products, services, finished jobs, menus or classes.
- The people: introduce staff, share how the business started, show who customers will meet.
- Helpful information: answers to the questions customers ask most often.
- Proof: customer feedback, with permission, and before and after examples where appropriate.
- Offers and dates: opening hours, events, seasonal items and limited availability.
Build the calendar from fixed points
Begin with what is already certain. Mark public holidays, school terms, local events, your own promotions, stock arrivals and any closures. Australian businesses often have a seasonal rhythm, such as end of financial year for accountants, Mother's Day for florists and gift shops, or the start of the school year for tutors and uniform suppliers. Fill those dates first, then spread your themes across the remaining days so no single theme dominates.
Decide a rhythm you can keep
Consistency matters more than volume. Three posts a week that you maintain for a year are more useful than daily posts that stop after a month. Pick a number that suits your team, then plan slightly under it so a busy week does not break the pattern. Choose which days you post and keep them regular, so followers learn when to expect you.
Gather material in one session
Set aside a block of time, ideally once a month, to take photos and short videos for the weeks ahead. Capture more than you need, in good light, with a clean background and your products or work clearly visible. Name the files by date or theme so they are easy to find. Batching saves effort and tends to produce a more consistent look than shooting on the day.
Write captions that serve the customer
A good caption is short, specific and clear about what to do next. Say what the item or service is, who it suits, and how to take the next step, whether that is calling, booking or visiting the website. Keep the tone the same across posts, as if one calm person is speaking for the business. Be careful with any claim you make: only state what you can back up.
Schedule, then leave room for the unexpected
Once posts are written, schedule them in advance so they go out whether or not you are busy. Keep a couple of gaps for timely news, such as a new arrival, a last minute cancellation slot or a community event.
Review once a month
At the end of the month, look at which posts prompted comments, messages or enquiries, and which were ignored. Note patterns and adjust next month's themes. Also check that enquiries from social are being answered promptly, because a well planned post is wasted if a message sits unread.
